CoolBirds.net now has a companion iPhone app to help birders and bird photographers log sightings in the field.

With the CoolBirds.net Mobile Bird Sighting Logger, users can log and browse sightings and track progress.

There are several birding apps on the Apple App Store which do amazing things.  I have purchased the following apps:

  • Audubon Birds $19.99 - a comprehensive Bird Guide for North American Birds
  • BirdsEye $19.99 - Bird locator plugged into Cornell Institute of Ornithology data
  • Sasol eBirds of South Africa $29.99 - Bird Guide based on the popular printed version

These apps can easily replace any PDF based solution and volumes of printed field guides, but many are big downloads and may be confounded with many features.  I do enjoy the ability to look up the mating, begging and alarm calls of a bird and see multiple high res photos but I also want to maintain my own bird lists.

CoolBirds.net is built to help birders keep lists of sightings.  All sightings are stored at minimum with location, species and time.  With this information CoolBirds.net can generate various lists.  So far birders only get year lists automatically generated but that is just the first demonstration of what can be done.

If you'd like to get the CoolBirds.net Mobile Bird Sighting Logger and want a way around paying the $7.99 license fee, I am offering promo codes, redeemable in iTunes if you log twenty sightings with bird photographs you have taken personally.  This offer is limited to the first twenty qualifiers and unfortunately only for US App Store users.
